Dear Friends,
Thank you very much for all your help that you gave me last year. Last year was very exceptional. We were able to carry out a few activities. The following were some of them:
- Roofing of Chiringa Health Centre’s Out-Patients Department
Chiringa Health Centre is a clinic in my home parish belonging to the Archdiocese of Blantyre, run by Sisters of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Last year the Out Patients’ Department of Chiringa Health Centre caught fire and was burnt down. It was not insured because it is expensive and it is not a legal obligation to do so. The Diocese and the people in my village were very much worried about the situation and how to get the Health Centre back on its feet again and serving the people. From the various donations made last year and the money from the One World (Sevenoaks Parish), we were able to help Chiringa Health Centre to put up a new roof. I sourced part of the money for the Project from the Irish Embassy.
- Help towards Feeding Program for the three orphanages
We support three orphanages, namely Kaligwenje Orphan Care, Chifundo Orphanage and Tidzuke Womens Group and Orphan Care. All three orphanages have feeding programs especially for the early childhood education program that they run. This year we provided money to all three centres as a help towards the feeding program.
- Construction of Orphanage of Tidzuke Women’s Group
Tidzuke Women’s Group and Orphan Care is currently housed in buildings that belong to Kochilira Health Centre. The management of the Health Centre has always expressed the wish to have the buildings back for use. The chief gave a piece of land to Tidzuke Orphan Care to construct its own offices and home. In the past we helped them with money to lay the foundations and now with part funding from us, they have been able to put up the walls. The community moulded the bricks, burnt them and the children and volunteers help carry the bricks to the construction site. It is a hard working community. Finances are available up to roofing level but the challenge will be where to find money for the furniture.
- Kachebere Major Seminary
a. Seminary Library: I am in-charge of the Library in the seminary and the needs are enormous. This year with the donations from here we were able to have six new book shelves fitted in the Library and a few other items bought for the repair of books.
b. Health Apostolate: As part of their formation to priesthood, our seminarians go out to Mchinji Hospital to visit the sick every Sunday and I am their patron. At the end of the year we decided to buy a few items to be given out to the needy patients. Some money you donated was given towards the purchase of those items
- Fees for Needy Students
For quite some time now, we have been running the project of helping needy students in Secondary Schools with school fees. Every year most of our money is spent on education because it is our belief that it opens the doors to the future for our children. This year we paid fees for twenty four really needy students, a number of whom are orphans in the orphanages we support. If you would like to know more, please speak to me separately.
- Training of Priests
For some years now, we have been able to make a contribution towards the training of three young men to priesthood in the Archdiocese of Blantyre. Thanks to those who have committed themselves to this course. The Archbishop is ever grateful.
- Two Computers for the Archdiocese of Blantyre
In July last year, thieves broke into Diocesan Offices and stole all computers, for this reason, two new lap top computers were donated to the diocese. The computers were given to me last year when I went to visit friends in Ireland.
- Twenty-two Cartons of clothing, dolls, footballs, shoes etc
Twenty-two cartons full of assorted items like clothing, dolls, shoes, footballs, football uniforms etc were sent to us for the orphanages from Sevenoaks Parish through the hard-work of Margaret Witty, Rosemary Graham and Kirsty Byrne who collected items, packed them and sent them to Malawi. Our children in the three orphanages were very happy to have them and they are very grateful to you all. We thank all those who made donations of various items and paid for the transportation costs.
- Car Repairs and New Car
With money donated by you, I was able to have my car (a pick up that was grounded) repaired when I returned home, ready for use. Many old parts were replaced and new ones fitted. I also had the car insured. Later I had a fatal accident with the repaired car. It was declared beyond economic repair. The Insurance Company made a good payment. With the Insurance money, help from friends in Ireland and some money from the donations from here, I was able to get a new car (a pick up, Toyota Hilux). The little debt remaining will be cleared from my supply money.
Once again thank you very much for your assistance. The lives of our people are gradually changing for the better. Your assistance makes my work as a priest easier as I am able to reach out to many. May God reward you abundantly for what you are doing for us!
Fr. Boniface Tamani.
